Why Get a Blood Screening?

A blood screening, also known as a blood test or blood work, involves analyzing a sample of blood to evaluate your overall health. Blood tests can reveal diseases, general health status, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, STIs and cancer risks. By regularly undergoing blood tests, you can detect potential health issues early, monitor existing conditions and take proactive steps to maintain and improve your health.

Blood Tests Provided at Covenant Health

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)

Measures enzymes, minerals, electrolytes, proteins, glucose and blood byproducts which reveal organ function and overall health/nutrition.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

Measures the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and hematocrit in a blood sample.  CBC can help diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions, including anemia, infection, and leukemia. It can also provide information about general health and how well the bone marrow and spleen are working.

Lipid Panel

Measures lipids/fats (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, HDL ratio, triglycerides) in the blood. These factors are essential, but high levels increase the risk of heart and vascular disease.

Hemoglobin A1C

Measures the average glucose level over 12 weeks; an important screening tool for individuals at risk for diabetes.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)

Measures the amount of PSA protein in the blood and is used to test for prostate cancer in men over age 50.

Genetic Testing

Identifies changes in genes, chromosomes or proteins in the blood. Results can confirm or rule out suspected genetic condition or chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are committed to patient education and transparency in our care. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please contact us for a consultation.

How to prepare for a blood test?

For some blood tests, you will have to fast for a certain amount of time before the test. The fasting time may vary depending on the test. Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements or herbs you are taking, as they can affect test results.

What happens during a blood test?

In most cases, a healthcare professional will use a needle to take a sample of blood from a vein in your arm. You might feel a small prick or stinging sensation. Once the provider has drawn enough blood, they will take the needle out and put an adhesive bandage over the site. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes.

What to expect after a blood test?

Most people experience minimal discomfort and can quickly return to normal activities after a blood test. Some people develop a small bruise at the site where the needle was inserted, so it’s best to avoid heavy lifting with the affected arm for a day or two. It’s also important to eat a small, nutritious snack after the test to stabilize blood sugar levels, especially if you were fasting before the test.

How long until I receive my results?

Your blood sample will be sent to a lab where trained technicians will look for the information your healthcare provider has ordered. This may take a day or up to a week or more. Ask your healthcare provider’s office how you should expect to find out about the results.
