What Is Vascular Medicine?

Vascular medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect circulation, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic system. Our specialists provide comprehensive care for both coronary vascular conditions, which impact the heart’s arteries, and peripheral vascular conditions, which affect blood flow throughout the rest of the body. Using advanced technology, we manage everything from common vein disorders to complex arterial diseases, ensuring patients receive expert, personalized treatment.

When Should You See a Vascular Specialist?

You may need to see a vascular specialist if you experience symptoms or have risk factors for circulatory issues, such as:

  • Pain or swelling in your legs
  • Persistent varicose or spider veins
  • Poor circulation, including cold or numb extremities
  • Symptoms of carotid artery disease, such as dizziness or blurred vision
  • A known diagnosis of a vascular condition requiring management or treatment

Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious complications and improve overall vascular health. Our vascular specialists work with you to determine the best course of action for your symptoms and overall health.

Vascular Conditions Treated

Heart and Blood Vessel Disorders

Heart and blood vessel disorders (coronary vascular disorders) refer to conditions that affect the arteries supplying blood to the heart, such as blockages, narrowing, or damage, which can lead to heart disease, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular complications. Examples include:

  • Atherosclerosis: Hardening and narrowing of the coronary arteries due to plaque buildup.
  • Aortic Dissection: A tear in the inner layer of the aorta, causing a medical emergency.
  • Carotid Artery Disease: Blockage or narrowing in the carotid arteries, increasing stroke risk.
Circulatory Disorders

Circulatory disorders (peripheral vascular disorders) are conditions that affect the blood vessels outside the heart and brain, including the arteries and veins in the limbs, leading to reduced blood flow, pain, swelling, and other circulation problems. Examples include:

  • Varicose Veins: Enlarged, twisted veins that often cause discomfort and swelling.
  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Narrowing of arteries in the limbs, reducing blood flow.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs, with risk of pulmonary embolism.
Lymphatic Disorders

Lymphatic disorders are conditions that affect the lymphatic system, which is responsible for fluid balance and immune function, leading to issues like swelling, fluid buildup, and immune system impairments. Examples include:

  • Lymphedema: Swelling due to fluid buildup from poor lymph drainage.
  • Lymphatic Malformations: Congenital abnormalities in the lymphatic system leading to fluid-filled cysts.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are committed to patient education and transparency in our care. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please contact our Customer Care Center at 865-374-0411.

What is the difference between a vascular specialist and a cardiologist?

A vascular specialist diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the entire vascular system, including blood vessels in the heart (such as coronary artery disease) and throughout the body (such as peripheral artery disease and aneurysms). While cardiologists focus on heart conditions like arrhythmias and heart failure, vascular specialists manage circulation-related disorders that impact both the heart and other critical areas, ensuring proper blood flow and preventing serious complications.

How do I choose a vascular surgeon?

When choosing a vascular surgeon, consider their experience, board certifications, and the hospital’s reputation for vascular care. At Covenant Health, our vascular specialists are highly trained in both minimally invasive and traditional procedures to ensure the best possible outcomes.

How much does vein treatment cost?

The cost of vein treatment depends on the procedure, insurance coverage, and individual needs. Our team will work with you to determine the best treatment plan and provide cost estimates based on your insurance benefits. Contact our billing team to learn about pricing and coverage options.

What is the difference between vascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery?

Vascular surgery focuses on treating diseases of the arteries, veins, and lymphatic system, both in the heart and throughout the body. This includes procedures like angioplasty, aortic aneurysm repair, and bypass surgeries for blocked arteries. Cardiothoracic surgery, on the other hand, involves surgical treatment of conditions affecting the heart, lungs, and chest, such as heart valve replacements and lung resections. At Covenant Health, our specialists collaborate to provide comprehensive care for both heart-related and peripheral vascular conditions.
