What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast used to diagnose breast diseases, particularly breast cancer. Mammograms can identify tumors that are too small to be felt in a breast exam. The American College of Radiology recommends annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40, and earlier for those at higher risk of breast cancer.

Many Covenant Health mammogram locations offer 3D mammography (tomosynthesis), an imaging technique that offers clearer images for better detection of smaller cancers – even with dense breast tissue.

What to Expect During a Mammogram?

During a mammogram, you will stand in front of a special X-ray machine where a technologist will position each breast between two plates. The plates will gently compress the breast in order to keep the radiation level as low as possible and take clear pictures of your breast tissue. The technologist will take pictures of each breast at different angles.

How to prepare for a mammogram?

On the day of your exam, wear clothing that you can easily remove. Do not use any antiperspirants, powders, lotions or perfumes under your arms or on your breasts, as these can appear as spots on the X-ray. Additionally, try to schedule your mammogram for 1-2 weeks after your period starts, as breasts are often tender and swollen closer to your period.

Are mammograms painful?

The mammogram itself is not painful, but you may feel brief discomfort or pain when your breast is moved around and compressed. The technologist will use all possible comfort measures and complete the test as soon as possible.

What are the risks of a mammogram?

Mammograms involve a low dose of radiation, but the benefits of early detection generally outweigh the risks.

2-D mammography vs. 3-D mammography

While there is no difference in how each screening feels, the main difference between a 2-D mammogram and a 3-D mammogram is how the images are processed. Traditional 2-D screenings provide images of the top and side of the breast. By comparison, 3-D mammograms can provide more images that are presented in “slices,” allowing the radiologist to see the tissue in better detail. 3-D mammograms are good for women younger than age 50, women with dense breast tissue and women who are premenopausal or perimenopausal.
