Center provides nutritional assessments, advises a healthy diet to aid in healing.
This Nutrition Awareness Month, the Methodist Wound Treatment Center is emphasizing the importance of good nutrition as a factor in wound healing.
The Nutrition Factor
Though often overlooked, nutrition is an extremely important part of the healing process. During the healing process, the body is busy adding new tissue, replacing fluids and fighting infection, so it needs increased amounts of water, calories, protein and vitamins.
“Because wound care is essential to the health and well-being of patients with wounds, we must provide patients with the tools they need for optimized healing. Nutritional assessments are an important part of what we do.”
William Hall, MD, medical director of the Wound Treatment Center.
After the assessment, the wound center team works in conjunction with a patient’s primary care provider to recommend dietary changes to promote healing.
Nutritional Tips to Aid Wound Healing
To kickstart their wound healing, Methodist Wound Treatment Center recommends that patients:
- eat balanced meals that include fruits and vegetables.
- drink plenty of fluids, especially those that are caffeine and sugar free.
- include a source of protein at each meal or snack.
Methodist Wound Treatment Center provides a comprehensive approach to treating patients with non-healing wounds. The team features clinicians with advanced training in wound care and hyperbaric medicine.
