Step 1: Apply

The first step of the hiring process is finding a role and submitting an application. Apply today!

Step 2: Interviews

A recruiter will contact you to start the interview process. Be prepared to discuss your skills and experiences. This is also an opportunity for you to learn more about us. We encourage you to ask questions about job requirements, the type of work you would be expected to do, and your team. Upon completion of the interview process, we will determine if an offer will be extended to you.

Step 3: Offer Process

The hiring manager and interviewers will make the final hiring decision. Applicants who are interviewed will be notified once the recruiting process has concluded, and the top candidate will receive an offer. Upon acceptance of our offer, your recruiter will help you coordinate your start date and you will be contacted by a Staffing Coordinator to walk you through the next steps.

Cardiology Unit

Cardiac floor 2N is a great stepping stone for nurses that want to get into ICU or the ER, but would like acute care experience first. 2N takes patients that have heart catheterizations, pacemakers, ablations and critical drips. The Cardiology unit works as team to provide excellent care to our patients, their families and each other. If you are ready to learn about the heart, the Cardiology Unit is the place to be, and our Cardiologists are ready and willing to answer any questions you may have.

Critical Care Unit

Our Critical Care Department consists of separate intensive care units – each designed to provide experienced nursing and support staff for each patient’s needs. This department treats a wide variety of complex, medically unstable patients between Med-Surg ICU and Med-Surg Stepdown within the locked unit for the safety and privacy of our critically ill patients. We specialize in a wide range of severe respiratory illness (BiPAP, High-Flow, ventilator), GI Bleed (Blakemore), post-operative, general medical ICU, proning/Roto prone and renal CRRT cases. We strive for 2:1 ICU and 3:1 Stepdown ratios with a free shift leader most shifts. As an RN in the Medical ICU unit, you will perform a variety of tasks such as Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), roto prone therapy for ARDS, management of shock and care for the complex medical surgical patient.

Emergency Department

The brand-new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department at our hospital provides outstanding patient care during emergent situations. Staff in our emergency department work in a very fast-paced environment to quickly assess conditions and stabilize patients in life-threatening emergencies such as strokes, heart attacks or severe injuries as well as less urgent medical issues. Fort Sanders Regional has the longest running comprehensive stroke certification in the region, meaning that our ED is trusted to care for a large portion of the area’s stoke patients. We use a innovative care model to drive ED flow that consists of RNs, LPNs, CNA/PCAs, and HUCs. Our Physician partners work very closely with the care team to provide exceptional service for not only the patient, but also the team.

Float Pool

At Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, our nursing Float Pool consists of an amazing team of nurses with a wide skill set that are trained to staff all acute care units in our hospital including our:
• Neuroscience Unit
• Pulmonary / Complex Medical Unit
• Post-Surgical Unit
• Nephrology Unit
• Oncology Unit
• Orthopedic Unit
• Cardiology Unit
Our float pool exists to help out every unit throughout our facility during times of ever-changing patient census and staffing needs. We require at least one year of recent RN experience as a requirement to join our float pool. As an incentive for the flexible nature of our positions, we offer an additional shift differential to all float pool employees. Our hospital nursing and support staff consists of RNs, LPNs, CNA/PCAs and HUCs who work together to provide exceptional patient care.

GI Lab – Endoscopy

The Endoscopy Lab at Fort Sanders Regional is a fast-paced, team-focused environment that serves as an outpatient ambulatory surgery center and accommodates inpatient add-on procedures. Some of the procedures performed include colonoscopies,esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), peg tube placement, pill cam studies, bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and Super Dimension Navigation. Our team consists of RNs, CSTs, CNAs, and a departmental assistant. Nursing responsibilities rotate within the department, and include pre-op, intra-op and post-op care with occasional scope room coverage as needed. Nurses are trained to prepare patients for procedures, assist the physicians with the procedures, electronically document the cases, handle specimens, educate patients for home care and ensure patients meet criteria prior to discharge.

Labor and Delivery Unit

Our women’s services unit is located on the sixth floor of the hospital and is comprised of labor and delivery, postpartum and nursery. We work with skilled and experienced obstetricians/gynecologists to deliver more high-risk babies than any other facility in the area. The department is a locked unit for the safety and privacy of our laboring patients. Our staff of Registered Nurses, OB Surgical Technicians, Certified Nurse Aides and Unit Secretaries make up a team that averages about 250 deliveries per month. As an RN in our labor and delivery unit, you will perform a variety of tasks such as providing care for patients utilizing fetal and maternal monitoring equipment, managing the patient’s pain including epidural and patient-controlled analgesia
administration, assist physician during delivery, treatment, examination and surgical procedures, as well as providing patient and family education on labor, pain and newborn care.

Nephrology Unit

The Nephrology Unit (3 West) at Fort Sanders Regional serves a wide variety of medical patients, with the primary population presenting acute or chronic renal failure, diabetes and cardiac issues. We focus on patients who have hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, urinary infections and other urological conditions. We specialize in the treatment of the kidney patient including those who are newly diagnosed with a kidney issue, as well as individuals who are long term dialysis patients. As an RN on our nephrology unit, you will perform a variety of tasks. Great basic nursing skills such as lines, drains and tubing practices are used on this unit every day as well as cutting edge dialysis therapies. In addition to having excellent critical thinking skills, our ideal candidate will also possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. You will participate in team nursing, with the RN as Team Leader. Our staff consists of RNs, LPNs, CNA/PCAs, and HUCs who work together to provide exceptional care. We work in close collaboration with one another, our physicians and interdisciplinary team.

Neuroscience

The Neurological Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is located on the fifth floor in the Center for Advanced Medicine (CAM) building conjoined with Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center main hospital. As the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in the Covenant Health network, we take great pride in providing exceptional care and timely treatment for our patients. The NICU is comprised of the Neuro ICU and the Neuro Step-Down unit. The department is a locked unit for the safety and privacy of our critically ill patients. We specialize and treat a wide range of neurological conditionals such as, but not limited to, hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes, aneurysms, subdural hematomas, post neurosurgical and interventional radiology cases.

Observation Unit

The Observation Unit is a fast-paced, comprehensive clinical unit that supports all specialties. This unit is critical to support patient flow and expedite care to our patients. The Observations Unit is a driving force between ED/Inpatient care, therefore strong communication and collaboration will be a strong focus to drive the overall performance. This unit is a great stepping stone for nurses that want to eventually work in ICU or ER.

Oncology Unit

At Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, leading cancer specialists use the most advanced technologies to achieve breakthrough successes in treating many types of cancer. We work closely with the Thompson Cancer Survival Center and Tennessee Cancer specialists to specialize in the treatment of the oncology patient, including those who are receiving inpatient chemotherapy and other hematology disorders, blood
transfusions or end-of-life care. The Oncology Unit at Fort Sanders cares for medical surgical patients with a specialization in Oncology. As an RN on our unit, you will be caring for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment, post-surgical care and so much more. The skillset is broad with IV and Port accessing, phlebotomy, NG tubes, PEG tubes, pleurex drains and wound care. Our staff consists of RNs, LPNs, CNA/PCAs, and HUCs who work together to provide exceptional patient care. As an organization, we want to grow our employees by promoting a culture of excellence and professionalism. We provide classes on site to become an Oncology Certified Nurse.

Orthopedic Med Surg Unit

The Orthopedic Med Surg Unit (5-West) specializes in Orthopedic Joint/Spine and Bariatrics. The Orthopedic Med Surg team consist of RNs, Nurse Navigator, LPNs, Certified Nurses’ Aides, Patient Care Associates, Student Nurse Associates and a Health Unit Coordinator. The team focus is providing excellent customer service and focused post-operative care, including ambulation, multi-modal pain management and standardized yet individualized patient home care education for our total joint/spine population. By joining the Orthopedic Med Surg team, you will partner with nurses and other staff with over 20 plus years of Medical/Surgical experience who participate in unit decisions, process improvement and unit celebrations. Orthopedic Med Surg follows a multi-disciplinary approach to providing patient care to include our surgeons, physicians, pharmacy, case management plus physical and occupational therapy which is provided at bedside or in the unit’s gym.

PACU – Post Anesthesia Care Unit

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit at Fort Sanders Regional is a fast-paced, team driven unit that serves a wide variety of postoperative patients. Our team recovers the majority of our surgical patients from our 17 suite ORs. In addition, we provide Phase I recovery care to patients requiring general anesthesia from other procedural areas. Our team consists of RNs, perioperative technicians and unit secretaries. Nursing responsibilities include some preoperative but mostly postoperative Phase I recovery care. Nurses are trained in Phase I recovery, working as a team with our anesthesiologists to meet safe criteria for discharge to the next phase of care.

Pulmonary Complex Medical Unit

The Complex Medical Unit is comprised of a wide variety of medically complex patients, many who are acutely ill and require a higher level of care than your average medical floor, but do not meet the need to be in a stepdown/ICU unit. Patients can include:
• Respiratory (BiPAP, High-Flow oxygen, chest tubes)
• Sepsis
• Endocrine
• Cardiac (non-titrated cardiac drip, heparin drip)
• GI (Dubhoff tubes, NG tubes)
• GU (catheters, bladder irrigation)
• Nephrology and dialysis patients
• Post-operative and Wounds (wound vac, various wound dressing and
management)
• Oncology (pleurx catheters, ports)
We have a supportive and close working relationship with our physicians. We encourage open communication and dialogue regarding individualized care to meet each one of our patient’s needs.

Surgery Unit – Med Surg

At Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, our board-certified surgeons use the most advanced technologies to provide care for a multitude of patients who have had Urological, Vascular, Wound or General Surgeries. The Surgery Unit (3 North) at Fort Sanders provides patient-centered care for our medical surgical patients, and our multidisciplinary team works together with patients and their families to design a personalized plan of care. Our staff consists of RNs, LPNs, CNA/PCAs, and HUCs who work together to provide exceptional patient care. We are very proud of our orientation process which will be tailored to your needs. Our orientation process is tailored to ensure you are getting the best tools and knowledge to make you successful at your job and to keep our patients safe.

Surgery Unit

Fort Sanders Regional’s extensive surgical capabilities are transforming the surgery experience for patients in East Tennessee. From the area’s first robotically assisted surgery system, image-guided brain and spinal cord procedures, to our hybrid operating room, Fort Sanders Regional provides patients more options and the best surgical technology available. We also offer traditional surgical options including advanced laparoscopy and day surgery procedures. With over 10,000 procedures performed each year, our surgical specialties include bariatrics, cardiothoracic, colon/rectal, orthopedics, plastics, vascular, sinus, neuro and surgical oncology. Our staff consists of RNs, Certified Surgical Technologists and Peri-Op / Anesthesia Techs who always work together to provide exceptional patient outcomes. Nurses in surgery work very closely with physicians to ensure our patients are safe.

Transitional Care Unit

The Transitional Care Unit (9 North / TCU) is a short-term care facility located on the 9th
floor of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center that provides extended physical or occupational therapy or skilled nursing care to patients transitioning from hospital to home. Patients on our unit have varied
diagnoses which include cardiac, respiratory and oncology comorbidities. Some patients come to TCU to receive wound care, or after they have had and joint replacement procedures. All patients on our unit benefit from our Therapy Department and have full access to the medical doctors in our facility. 9 North has a registered nurse on duty around the clock. Skilled caregivers on this unit also include licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, case managers, therapists and activities coordinators.

The Laser Center – GI Center of Excellence

Founded in 1988, our Center of Excellence for Barrett’s Esophagus is an alliance of medical professionals, research organizations, and supporting services that perform extensive research and provide comprehensive and well-coordinated care for our patients. Over the years, we have led and participated in numerous clinical studies, including photodynamic therapy (PDT), which was pioneered in our facility in 1990. We currently provide an array of endoscopic treatment options for Barrett’s patients, including radiofrequency ablation, endoscopic mucosal resection, argon plasma coagulation, cryotherapy, and bipolar electrocoagulation. We are nationally recognized for our state-of-the-art treatment options, excellent treatment outcomes, and peer-reviewed publications, and we have patients travel to receive treatment here from all over the country.
