About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Center at Cumberland Medical Center uses a variety of treatments to accelerate wound healing. For some types of wounds, such as limb-threatening diabetic wounds, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can be an effective treatment therapy.

During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the patient breathes 100% pure oxygen, which is delivered inside a pressurized chamber. The increased air pressure inside the chamber helps blood carry more oxygen to organs and connective tissues to promote wound healing.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is provided once daily to patients at Cumberland Medical Center for approximately four to six weeks. One treatment takes about two hours and is quite comfortable for most patients.
