Lisa Carter RN, Honored with DAISY Award

A nurse at Parkwest Medical Center was honored today with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days. Congratulations to Lisa, an RN in our Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit for being recognized with the DAISY award.  Lisa was nominated by a patient’s daughter for providing a high level of nursing care to her father during his hospital stay.

Lisa’s Nomination

“My father was admitted to the cardiac care floor with advanced heart disease. Many of the nurses, LPNs and CNAs were very kind and helpful. We were very impressed with the staff during his week stay. However, Lisa Carter is hands down the best nurse he was blessed enough to have received care from.

While our father was in an advanced state of decline with a failing heart, Parkinson’s and confusion, Lisa went above and beyond to provide top notch communication, explanations of procedures, and she also very carefully tracked his fluids in and out. She also made sure to reiterate the cardiac diet ordered.

One of the things that really impressed me was that the he had IVs that had leakage and were bloodied after a few days. This was before Lisa was on shift and before we had met Lisa. The nurses who oversaw dad’s IVs and administered medication through these told us that because his skin was so old and crinkled was why blood was escaping and scabbing.

However, when Lisa came on her first shift with my father, she immediately explained that the state of his IVs were unacceptable. She cleaned them and installed new IVs on each arm. We as a family kept watch over my dad so that he would be alone and so we would not miss his physicians. Lisa was by far the most detailed, focused, order abiding and quality nurse we encountered during his hospital stay. Not only was her medical detail top notch but she also took the time to explain what each medication was and each procedure taking place.

Our father was a medical doctor with many questions and naturally curious. Lisa was patient and kind even though she had numerous patients to care for. She took her time and treated our loved one with respect, compassion, and excellence in her profession. Nurses like Lisa save lives. She should be awarded the highest award for her extraordinary and professional expertise, social skills and compassion. She was also incredibly thoughtful to all of our family while we were there.”

Lisa was recognized by DAISY Committee and senior leadership team.
