A nurse at Parkwest Medical Center were honored recently with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days.
Congratulations to Kayla, a nurse in the Childbirth Center, for being recognized with the DAISY award. Kayla was nominated for the lasting impression she made on her patient during their hospital stay. Read her nomination below:
Kayla’s Nomination
“Kayla attended my son’s birth and she was amazing. I was not planning on being induced and was hoping to have an unmedicated birth, but my plans had to change. I told Kayla I wanted to attempt an unmedicated birth and she was honest about what my experience would be with pitocin. She didn’t say I couldn’t do it and in fact made me feel more empowered than the last time I delivered in 2021. She gave me one opportunity when I was 7cm knowing I was close but again never made me feel like I was making the wrong decision. Instead, she supported me and my husband the entire time I was
laboring. She even taught my husband some coping techniques like counter pressure to help manage my discomfort. I successfully delivered without an epidural and I attribute a lot of my success to Kayla’s attentiveness and help. I went into this birth feeling very discouraged but Kayla totally transformed my view of hospital birth and my personal ability to deliver without medication. Obviously, she was amazing through my time at the hospital but this specific experience stood out so dramatically to me. She deserves all the awards!”
