A nurse at Parkwest Medical Center was honored recently with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the superhuman efforts nurses give every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days.
Congratulations to Christy, a nurse on Parkwest’s Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Unit, for being recognized with the DAISY Award. Christy was nominated by two different individuals for her professionalism and kindness.
Christy’s First Nomination
“Please award Christy the DAISY Award. My dad spent two weeks at Parkwest. We were blessed with many good nurses, but Christy was our favorite. She went above and beyond taking good care of our dad. She was so patient and kind to him and our family. He required a lot of time and care, but she never seemed irritated or flustered when we called for her.
“When we realized his time on earth was soon coming to an end, she was extra caring to us, evening giving some of us a hug when we needed one. Before leaving for several days off work, she came in to say goodbye to him and our family. Our dad is now in Heaven, but in spite of the difficult last two weeks of his life, it was also a very sweet two weeks to me. Much of that is because of nurses like Christy. I will be forever grateful to her, and other nurses like her.” Nominated by Laura, Patient’s daughter
Christy’s Second Nomination
“Christy lives up to her last name, which is Bright. I have not met another nurse who goes above and beyond for their patients like Christy does. Christy even goes above and beyond for patients who aren’t hers, just because she believes every patient has a right to be cared for how she’d care for her own family. She had a post-surgical patient once who’d had an abdominal aortic aneurysm when they arrived on our floor.
“Christy knew something was wrong with her patient from the time they got to the floor. As the shift went on, her patient got weaker, and she noticed abnormal bruising on the abdomen. Their closures opened internally. Christy called the doctor, who told her to rush the patient back to the OR. By the grace of God, she got the patient downstairs to the OR in time that they didn’t bleed out internally. Dr. Tonks gave her a ‘high-five’ for saving his patient.
“There have been plenty of other instances where Christy noticed something was wrong much sooner than others. Her Intuition is the best tool she’s got in her arsenal.” Nominated by a previous coworker
