Covenant Health Morristown-Hamblen Now Offering Robotic-Assisted Surgeries

Covenant Health Morristown-Hamblen now offers robotic-assisted surgeries using state-of-the-art technology in general, urologic and gynecological surgeries.

The da Vinci Xi is a robotic-assisted surgical system used in minimally invasive surgeries. These surgeries offer a better patient experience due to quicker recovery times, less pain, smaller incisions and an overall better outcome. Specially trained surgeons are always in control of the system, which replicates the surgeon’s hand movements in real-time with more precision and range of motion. It has high-resolution, 3D images on a computer screen to better guide the surgeon, enabling them to make smaller incisions.

“Surgeries that often require two physicians or multiple assistants can now be performed with only the surgeon and a surgical technologist because it expands the surgeon from two hands to four effectively,” said Justin Bigalke, director of surgical services at Morristown-Hamblen.

While the technology will currently only be used in general, urologic and gynecological surgeries, Bigalke says that having this system could eventually expand the types of surgeries offered in the future.

The addition of this technology allows patients in the Morristown area to get high-quality surgical care closer to home without needing to travel to Knoxville. Morristown-Hamblen also offers inpatient and outpatient surgical services, including robotic knee replacements and other orthopedic surgeries; ear, nose and throat surgeries; and gastrointestinal surgeries.
