A nurse at Methodist Medical Center was honored recently with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days.
Congratulations to Candius Cummins, a registered nurse on Methodist’s 2W Medical-Surgical unit, for being recognized with the DAISY award. received not just one nomination but a total of four nominations. These included handwritten submissions from a grateful patient, the family members of two different patients and a co-worker.
Methodist’s interim Chief Nursing Officer, Shaun Clayton, delivered the award during a special Nurses’ Week event and members of the patient’s family were on hand during the heartfelt presentation.
Read her nomination below and portion of the remarks:
Candius went above and beyond while my husband was at Methodist. She answered all questions and was so thorough in her care. She has a true caring heart and is truly in right position. We were blessed to meet her.
[Paraphrased] In the middle of my case, which was very rough after a colon resection, Candius listened to me and made sure to answer all my questions. Even though she was busy with so many things, she made sure to get all my consults from my surgeon and kidney doctor scheduled quickly. She is very mature, energetic and has good sense of humor. She is my excellent choice for the DAISY award.
Never in my nursing career have a nominated a co-worker for the DAISY award. I believe this award is one of the most special kinds of award a nurse can obtain, and it is an award that I personally do not take lightly. Anyway, enough about me. Let’s talk about this incredible individual, Candius. It’s an understatement for me to say that she goes above and beyond because she goes every further than that. She stays late to make sure her patients are in perfect shape. She stays late to help night shift get a boost at the beginning of their shifts. She always makes sure her patients and their family members are comfortable and will hunt down extra recliners or even beds to ensure their well-being. All these examples are things Candius doesn’t have to do but she WANTS to do them. She is humble, patient, kind, giving – in short, everything anyone what their nurse to be. Candius is an example for ALL nurses to follow and she deserves this award.
“Candius, the DAISY Award is a very distinct award, and as a fellow nurse, I am incredibly proud to bestow this honor upon you,” said Methodist’s interim Chief Nursing Officer, Shaun Clayton, during the presentation. “Whether providing care at a patient’s bedside, comforting a worried family, or working side-by-side with a teammate, you have shown all the qualities of an outstanding nurse. Thank you for being a part of the Methodist Medical Center family and for making a difference in the lives of those around you.”
