Congratulations to Shawn Sullivan from Peninsula for winning the BEE Award! He was nominated by his co-worker for the amazing care he provides to his patients every day and for being a wonderful mentor to staff within the hospital. Read his nomination below:
Shawn’s Nomination
“Shawn has worked at Peninsula for 28 years.
One story that sticks out is that Shawn keeps an extra pair of shoes in his car. He says it is because he goes walking after work sometimes. I am not convinced that is the only reason. I know of at least three occasions where he has gone to his car and gave a patient his shoes because they were having to go home without any. On one occasion, he gave some shoes to his patient and they were so excited that they danced around the lobby smiling and laughing. He said that he had never owned a pair of Nikes before.
We had another patient who had been a patient many times over the years. He had been coming to us since he was a kid on the adolescent unit. This patient always asks if Shawn or Mr. Sullivan is still here even though it’s been a few years since he worked on that unit. He always wants to speak to him while he is here because he says that Shawn always listened and helped him.
Shawn has recently been asked to work with our discharge transports and he has taken this new assignment to a new level. He has traveled many miles to provide the best patient care that he possible can. He recently drove 3.5 hours to take a patient’s medication that they left in the lobby after they were discharged home. His attention to detail has helped make sure the patients he transports makes it home safely with their belonging and medications.
When he checks off the new techs, he makes sure we know what he is signing off on. I learned more from him while he was checking on me on my new hire checklist than I did throughout my orientation. He wants us to show him that we know it and if we don’t, he walks us through it very thoroughly. He says he wants to make sure that we are set up with the knowledge and the tools to be successful.
I could go on about the things that Shawn does for our patients. Shawn is the type who does things and keeps them to himself. He does them because helping people is his passion and he does not like being in the spotlight. He is a wonderful person, mentor, patient advocate and co-worker. “
